GANPAN • KOREAN SIGNS ON CANVAS
This seven-canvas piece emerged from a deep longing to return to a place that is not only distant by way of location, but remains a distant place in time.
Despite having grown up in New York, I spent a great deal of my adult life living and working in Korea as a Korean-American. When I had initially moved there, I despised much of the place for the ridiculous reason that it simply wasn’t NY. For the first few years, I would dream almost every night of getting on a subway train in Seoul and taking it to downtown Manhattan.
Then, a year or two became several years (and ultimately more than a decade) in a foreign country that felt less and less foreign to me—that ended up feeling strangely like a home. I’m back in the states now, but when I sleep, I dream that I’m in Korea… and I get to visit the location of my youth, and I try to recapture a magic that was dismissed far too easily in what now feels like a past life.
This painting is a souvenir that I brought back from those dreams.
